Treatment Glossary

There are many treatments on the market and knowing what they all do can be confusing. Even though many practitioners will explain, it’s always handy to be armed with some prior knowledge.

The Black Skin Directory Treatment Glossary is a useful starting guide giving you a snap shot of popular treatments and what they can do for your skin, highlighting any particular benefits for darker skin tones.

  • Microdermabrasion

A popular exfoliating treatment, Microdermabrasion gently buffs away old and dead skin cells to reveal a new layer underneath. This treatment helps to improve texture, age spots and blackheads, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores and acne scarring.

  • Mesotherapy

This minimally invasive treatment uses a cocktail of active ingredients such as vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, enzymes and amino acids to rejuvenate the skin. The solution is injected into the skin using superfine needles.

  • LED Treatment

LED stands for Light-Emitting Diodes and uses coloured light to penetrate the skin and trigger the body’s natural cell processes to accelerate rejuvenation and repair. Using red, blue and infrared light LED is known to help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, acne as well as improving collagen and elastin production.

  • Microcurrent & Nanocurrent Facials

Using low-grade electrical current Microcurrent and Nanocurrent treatments stimulate facial muscles underneath the skin to create a tighter and toned appearance. Microcurrent can lift the eyebrows, define the cheekbones, stimulate collagen as well as tightening and firming the skin. Nanocurrent stimulates the skin cells to prompt skin renewal, leaving a supple and radiant complexion.

  • Microneedling

This treatment is great for improving scarring, wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin and texture. A microneedling roller device creates tiny microscopic punctures into the surface of the skin, encouraging controlled superficial wounds that supercharges the skin’s healing process to stimulate collagen and hyaluronic acid.

  • Chemical Peel

Using the strength of Alpha Hydroxy Acids such as Glycolic Ccid and Beta Hydroxy Acids such as Salicylic Acid chemical peels provide deeper exfoliation, penetrating into the pores to remove old skin cells and excess oil. There are a wide variety of chemicals available, at different strengths, suitable for all skin types.
